A lot of Ugandans face poverty daily. This poverty can be in the lack of basic needs like food, clean drinking water, clothes, or soap for example. We were able to help different groups within the community of Kalungami by handing out those basic needs. For example, we managed to hand out food packages, which contained rice, maize flour, and beans amongst other things.
Besides this, we were able to distribute sanitary pads to girls in Kalungami. Handing out sanitary pads is something we really feel from our hearts. We see that many girls end up on the wrong path, because they do not know how to get access to these basic needs. As a result, girls sometimes have multiple boyfriends and become pregnant unplanned. Having several boyfriends provides a source of income and in this way they can provide for themselves. The girls from the tailoring project make reusable washable sanitary pads, so that we can help the girls in a sustainable way.
We also regularly hand out clothes to the children in Kalungami, made by the girls from the tailoring project. It’s great that we can serve two purposes in this way; giving students the opportunity to learn while helping children who have little clothing. Many children in Kalungami have little clothing because there is a lot of poverty. It is always a joy to gather the children together and bring a smile to their faces in this way.
We are aware that we cannot solve the poverty problem with these distribution campaigns. Nevertheless, we think it is important to continue to do this. We do this to offer hope to the community and to show that we are there for them. We will continue to do these hand outs in the future to show God’s love for the community in Kalungami.
